Since I’ve yet to enter the next generation of consoles, I picked up The Legend of Zelda: Twilght Princess for the Gamecube yesterday. A new Zelda is a new Zelda, so I know I’ll enjoy it even though I’ve played the same basic game before, with a new twist. If you happened to pick up Okami before this though, like I did, the twist feels a bit dulled.
After playing a bit and beating the first boss, I noticed some similarities between the two. Aside from the obvious wolf bit, the two share some other similarities such as objectives. Restore the guardian trees/light spirits, cursed lands/twilight… etc. There’s even a dash of Metroid Prime in there, with the “hone your senses” wolf option acting like a visor to see things you couldn’t normally see. Not that these are bad things, but since Okami was only 3 months before this, it kinda hurt my first impressions.
Contrary to Okami, perhaps the best thing you’ll notice about Zelda is Midna. Midna is the game’s version of Issun; your helpful companion who hands out hints and what not throughout your journey. She does MUCH less talking and “hand holding” than her Okami counterpart, and can be funny and cute at times.
More gripes and praises to come as I progress through the game.
